These four totally badass sharks were made just before the COVID lockdown of 2020 - I worked on them around my birthday and into the holiday season of 2019… It started off so simply…
The first shark, Pistris Odium started off with a quick sketch, and within a handful of hours, it was mostly wrapped up… A few final touches the next day, and I signed it, labeled it and moved the fuck on… 1 - 1.5 days. Fast lil Mako volunteered into existence.
But not long after, attempting to bask in the after-art-glow that any artist knows so well… I thought, what if it had a bigger, more gnarly mouth, and what if the Sunburst was even more gonzo? Aaaaalllsssooo, what if I painted the thing friggen Orange? Let’s make it a giant Great White!
Thus, came Pistris Horribilis - which seemed to only weigh in at a few hours longer than the volunteer clarity of Odium… but, the increase in complexity in the waves and all that, maybe it was 3 days of work? Not bad.
… Follows the weekend… follows the Monday, and man… the afterglow is good, but it ain’t over… not by a long shot. Enter, Pistris Malignum.
What if, and also how, we need to a) increase the complexity of the waves again, but also b) change the presentation (let’s do a dark scene - deep water or night, even!) and c) let us visit one of the strangest of shark species, the HAMMERHEAD.
Ah, you labor of love you, claiming a full week of effort… maybe even a few days on top of it, clocking in at 7 - 10 days of effort with the boulder. Worth the effort… but now, as much as I love the number 3 - it feels imbalanced. God dammit. I need another night shark and now I need it to face the same way as whichever isn’t already partnered. Damn.
So, you luck out, I made 4 badass sharks… and each one more complex than the last… The Goblin, that rare bastard of a creature - I had to give it a ghost ship in greywash… Because, the fella that taught me to tattoo did greywash, and I had to try and harness something like that, but with a brush and a whole lot of patience. This effort weighed in at something like 10 or 12 - 15 days.
And the Science Shark (the secret, bonus 5th of the series), My son owns the original and mayhap, once these sell out, I make some of those available to the world. That boy was an effort, taking easily 5 weeks, I barely finished it for Xmas for him, but I did… It has glasses, and waves of all various colorful chemicals frothing from various beakers, flasks, test tubes and at least one Erlenmeyer… and because I like to make my own life difficult - (cos a shark wearing glasses wasn’t enough) - I decided to greywash a friggen space shuttle into the tiny spaces between cascading chemical finger waves.
Anyway, Buy em all, or buy 1 of them… I only had 20 of each of them printed this first go-round. If you like it, you love it, buy some more of it.
