An exploration of the Macabre-Abstract,
Extinction Burst (working title), as a series represents a particular high point in my story. Basically, if I had access to a time machine, and I was so inclined to take these pieces, back to the past, say, around October 01, 2016 - and to show them to past-present-me, and say "you'll make these in less than a year," I'd tell him (the me from the past-future), "about damn time."
As a creative, seeing things in your head, but being unable to faithfully translate them, it's akin to telling someone a dream. Try as you may, no amount of detail will illuminate the listener to the exact feeling, the visceral pulse of being there... All of the references, symbolism, what it means to you. By the time you finish explaining it, your quarry may be in their own dreams. When you cannot translate art to paper or canvas, it's an itch you can't reach. It's an epic you've seen from start to finish, but all you manage is an unexemplary cough when you attempt to share the sublime.
With Extinction Burst, I'd finish a piece, and then be a bit in wonderment that my hands did that. They translated a mess of an idea, beside a stark and clearly executed form, in a way that again, left me quite elated to behold.
And, somehow, I can't think of how to define this series. It's hybrid blackwork, it's abstract, it's a bit macabre, it's psychedelic, it's a mess of ideas - all of it, and yet it's a concept that has received a pretty warm reception when I've shared the works.
I - A Slumbering Colossus
